Certain actions that you perform on your Mac will cause default apps to open. For example, clicking a document may open Pages. But what if you want Microsoft Word to open instead? You can also set your default web browser and email reader.

For most users, those who manage multiple email accounts or need to sift through and file away thousands of emails per day, may find it lacking. Mac OS X ships with Mac Mail built-in, and automatically set as the default email application on your iMac or MacBook / Air / Pro. As soon as you install another program capable of handling email, it can be set as the new default. Unlike changing the default web browser on a Mac, the default mail handler is not controlled from the centralized system preferences app (weird quirk!).
How to change the default Mac app for specific file types

- Right-click on a file that uses the file type you'd like to change the default for. For example, one with a .jpg extension (a photo).
- Click on Get Info in the pop-up.
- Click Open With if the section isn't already expanded.
- Click the dropdown and choose an app.
- Click Change All.

- Launch System Preferences from the dock, Finder, or by clicking the Apple icon in the Menu bar.

Mail is likely the default email app on your Mac, but just in case you have others downloaded, you can set the default reader. Here's how:
- Launch Mail from your dock or the Finder.

I've been trying to change the default email application on my Macbook Pro unsucessfully.
I'm using Outlook 2016 on my Mac and would like to use it for all my email as I use Safari to login to my personal web mail. K meleon download for mac. On Yosemite I would open Mail, go to Preferences and change the Default Email Application in the menu to Outlook. I can do that on El Capitan but as soon as I close preferences and open it again the setting is back to Mail.
